What Movie Has the Best Theme Song?

May 10, 2008 by Joe

Theme SongThere’s nothing better than heading to the theatre or popping in your favorite DVD, and having some amazing sound blasting through your ears, shaking the room. In fact, it’s one of my favorite experiences of seeing a great movie, and still gives me goosebumps to this day. Some movies, as I’m sure you’ll agree, just have that special something about their theme songs. It leaves you with a feeling of awe and excitement in anticipation of a great movie.

We all have our own opinions about what could possibly be the best theme song, and that’s what I’d like to ask you. What theme song is the most memorable one in your mind? What gives you chills or goosebumps just thinking about it, making you want to pop it in your DVD player right now?

For me, it’s Star Wars. That theme song is really powerful in my mind. I can’t say I was around for the first time it aired on the big screen, but I remember when the films were digitally remastered, and I saw them in theatres. It was my first movie since 101 Dalmations (the cartoon version), so it was a great moment for me. I was just left in awe, inspired by the powerful fanfare. Thinking back, it could be one of the reasons why I work in a movie theatre now. Looking back on moments like that makes you realize that a powerful theme song could be what makes a movie so memorable.

So what is it, in your opinion. I’ve left some options below, or on the Polls page. However, feel free to vote for “other” and submit a comment as to what you think it should be. If I think there could be enough interest, I’ll add it to the poll!

To make things a bit more fun, when you vote, please leave a comment, and let me know why you voted for what you voted for. Those people who do this will be entered into a contest to get the soundtrack of that movie (if it’s available, and within reason.. :-)) from Amazon.com! I’ll make the drawing at the end of the month, so what are you waiting for? Let’s vote!

What movie has the best theme song?

Alright, sister. There’s a poll at the bottom of the post.. or you can click on the “Poll” button on the navigation bar. I’m going to come over to your room right now to explain it actually. I don’t know if you should be eligible to win, I think I did enough for your birthday and christmas already. :-P

  4. Joe on May 12th, 2008 12:59 pm

I don’t want to seem like I am biased towards people I’m related to, right? Good choice though. I like dinosaurs.

Ooh, when I started reading your post I thought to myself: Star Wars! But then I got to see your choices and recognized what a well known and familiar theme James Bond has. I would add Star Trek, Back To The Future, Indiana Jones… ooh I see Superman is there. What too choose? I think I will go with Superman. Thanks for a cool post!

  6. Joe on May 12th, 2008 11:50 pm

Thanks buddy! I was thinking about adding Indiana Jones when after I wrote this.. so it’s been added!

  7. matt on May 13th, 2008 3:09 pm

You chose a standout class of theme songs but Indiana Jones edges out James Bond in my book. James Bond’s theme sounds the edgiest and coolest to me, but the Indiana Jones theme captures a much wider range of emotions that’s both exciting and playful.

  8. Stephanie on May 13th, 2008 9:57 pm

I’m a HUGE Grease fan, but I have to agree that Indiana Jones takes the prize!

  9. Fletch on May 13th, 2008 10:32 pm

I went with Indy Jones, too. Another decent one to add (or at least mention) would be The Saint. The movie’s not the best around, but the theme is pretty cool, especially the one Orbital did for the movie.

  10. Joe on May 14th, 2008 1:53 am

Looks like Indy is taking the quick lead guys!

@Stephanie, I bet my sister and you would get along very well!

Fletch and Matt… glad to see a couple fellow LAMBs here! Hopefully I can get a few more of you over!

How do people feel about “The Saint”? Should it be added? Let me know!

As I read through your bloggerie, my immediate response was something Like ‘Men in Black’ where there is a single released along with the Movie as a kind of double self promotion.

Does the fact that I can’t remember the Jarrasic Park theme song mean that that one shouldn’t win?
The Superman theme, you can’t really sing out loud, so that one shouldn’t win.
Grease is a bit rubbish, so that shouldn’t win.

Out of the others, it’s really a dead heat for me, they are all fantastic theme tunes, and I get excited just thinking about them, hurr.
Indiana Jones should win, as there have been less rubbish Indie films than the others.

  12. Joe on May 14th, 2008 12:57 pm

Good stuff, Philip! Actually, when I was in band in college, I sang the Superman theme for the goalie on the Hockey team. Maybe it wasn’t so much singing as it was … humming with the band.

Also, interesting idea with the singles released with movies.. I’ll have to do some research on that.

For me, it was a toss-up between Mission Impossible and Jurassic Park. Both have great theme music.

  14. Joe on May 15th, 2008 8:14 am

Hey Brian! Nice to see another gravatar other than my own! Excellent choices. I think personally, MI was more memorable to me.

I voted Jurassic Park - bomb ass soundtrack!

  17. Amanda on May 21st, 2008 4:16 pm

Mission Impossible was the first thing that popped into my head as soon as I read “theme song!” I don’t even consider it to be my favorite movie, but it was definitely a great theme song!

  18. Joe on May 21st, 2008 4:20 pm

Nice, looks like you’re pushing Mission Impossible back towards the lead again!

  19. David on May 23rd, 2008 5:01 am

I don’t know why you left it off, because everyone knows it, but the rocky theme song is by far the best (gonna fly now, feeling strong now)

  20. Joe on May 23rd, 2008 8:13 am

Agreed, David. Per your suggestion, it’s been added, and a vote for you! Keep the votes and comments coming… win that soundtrack!

  21. Strong One on May 28th, 2008 10:16 am

Well unfortunately I’m a lil biased. I just saw the new ‘Indy’ movie. I do believe that the theme music is so viral and so recognizable though!
It would be a tough decision between Star Wars and Indy. Kind of funny that the man/men behind the scenes of both those movies… are the same!!

  22. AsceticMonk on May 29th, 2008 1:22 am

Since no one mentions it, I guess I will be first. I really like the music in Atonement.

  23. bocah on May 29th, 2008 12:49 pm
