3D Movies on the Way: Iron Man 2?

September 12, 2008 by Joe

The next dimension looks to make it’s way to theatres soon, according to the Variety.  The deal looks to be close with three major motion picture studios, Universal, Disney, and Fox, have agreed with the Digital Cinema Implementation Partners (DCIP).  It looked to be a done deal, with the WSJ reporting earlier today that Paramount had also signed on, adding that elusive 4th partner needed for financial backing to kick in, and the installation of many more digital projectors and screens.  The DCIP, which represents Regal Entertainment Group, AMC Entertainment, and Cinemark USA.  JP Morgan will provide the financial backing needed to acquire all the new equipment for the roughly 14,000 screens represented by the group.

This could be good news for theatres, as 3D movies can command higher ticket prices, and provide the innovation needed to get people out of their homes and back into theatres.  Personally, I’m really excited for this, because it might be the kickstart that the theatre industry needs.  I can imagine seeing a movie like Iron Man or Batman in 3D and be totally immersed in the environment.  Well… good news about that too, because Iron Man 2 may be one of the first all digital, IMAX, 3D movies!  This, courtesy of my good friends over at First Showing dot Net.

I can’t wait for a fourth studio to sign on, so that this initiative can get started.  I really think that this is the dealbreaker that will start to bring people back to theatres, because it’s something not even the best home theatre can provide.  What do you think?  Is this the kind of thing that would bring you to the movies every week?
