Weekend Wrap Up: More Chihuahuas at the Top

October 15, 2008 by Joe

In a late edition of the Weekend Wrap Up this week (sports have kept me busy), Beverly Hills Chihuahua managed to find it’s way to the top again!  I think this affirms the fact that people were in fact looking for something that their kids could see with them.  Usually, with a movie like Quarantine out, I tend to find that kids movies like the Chihuahuas do better because kids will try to buy tickets for that movie while intending to sneak into their film of choice.  I get to foil them though, so I don’t mind!  Here’s how the rest of the box office turned out:

1 Beverly Hills Chihuahua (2008) $17.5M $17.5M
2 Quarantine (2008) $14.2M $14.2M
3 Body of Lies (2008) $12.9M $12.9M
4 Eagle Eye (2008) $10.9M $70.4M
5 Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist (2008) $6.42M $20.7M
6 The Express (2008) $4.56M $4.56M
7 Nights in Rodanthe (2008) $4.54M $32.3M
8 Appaloosa (2008) $3.32M $10.9M
9 The Duchess (2008) $3.3M $5.6M
10 Fireproof (2008) $3.14M $16.9M

So, for a holiday weekend, the numbers weren’t that impressive.  I think that it turned out to be very even, which happens more when you have a larger number of quality films out and people have to pick while they catch up on their moviegoing.  I know that I have so many to catch up on it’s not even funny.  What is discouraging is that a lot of movies, like How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, are already on their way out and I haven’t even seen them yet!!

In any case, the busiest time for me was the holiday afternoon.  Looks like a lot of people took the time off from work to go see a movie, at least around where I was.  I found that people came a lot earlier than they would on a normal weekend… I don’t know if the crowds were expected or if they just had more time… but people also bought more food… or that could be my cash register skillz.  In any case, that run-on sentence is my cue to stop, so more later!!!
