Last Weekend Wrap Up: Going 2 Africa
November 13, 2008 by Joe · Leave a Comment
Looks like the down economy didn’t deter people from flocking to theatres this weekend. With the holiday on Tuesday, people took advantage of the extra time off and headed to the movies. While I wasn’t surprised at the film that ended up on top, the #2 did surprise me, especially being rated R. Here’s how the weekend box office numbers looked: Read more

Weekend Wrap Up: Return to High School
November 2, 2008 by Joe · Leave a Comment
I think it can safely be said that this Halloween wasn’t one for the movies. Despite a few good horror selections (Saw V, Changeling, The Haunting of Marley Hartley), many opted for other forms of entertainment. I really think that theatres should be able to get a nice digital copy of Rocky Horror Picture Show, and be allowed to do something special for it every year. I think that staff and guests would be able to have a lot of fun with it! Instead, I just got to deal with kids sneaking into Saw V, pissing off other guests and subsequently having to kick them out. Oh well. Did have a few interesting costumes from the staff… wish I got some pictures. Anyway, here’s how the weekend turned out: Read more

Weekend Wrap Up: Back to High School
October 29, 2008 by Joe · Leave a Comment
I’m back!!! Well, for a brief post tonight. I’ve really missed blogging here, and I want to get back to it, but I’ve just been so busy. Lots of working, and trying to study for the GMAT. I can’t say that I’ve done enough of the latter, but I’m getting to it. I experienced the business of this weekend, as you can see by the numbers I’ve listed below. Parents brought their kids out in droves to check out High School Musical 3. I can’t say that I see the appeal in the movie, but plenty of people obviously did. I expect a strong weekend for Saw III next weekend, especially on Halloween night. We’re allowed to dress up at work this year… do you think I should? Read more

Weekend Wrap Up: More Chihuahuas at the Top
October 15, 2008 by Joe · Leave a Comment
In a late edition of the Weekend Wrap Up this week (sports have kept me busy), Beverly Hills Chihuahua managed to find it’s way to the top again! I think this affirms the fact that people were in fact looking for something that their kids could see with them. Usually, with a movie like Quarantine out, I tend to find that kids movies like the Chihuahuas do better because kids will try to buy tickets for that movie while intending to sneak into their film of choice. I get to foil them though, so I don’t mind! Here’s how the rest of the box office turned out: Read more

Weekend Wrap Up: Eagle Eye is Tops
September 28, 2008 by Joe · Leave a Comment
Hey all… been pretty busy lately, mainly cleaning my room and having a birthday celebration (not for myself), hopefully I haven’t lost any of you! The weekend is just about over, and it looks like Eagle Eye took the top of the box office, with 29.2 million in box office receipts! This did go along with what I predicted (or did I, I don’t know if i made a prediction or not) in my Movies this Weekend! column. Surprisingly, #2 was the Diane Lane/Richard Gere take, Nights in Rodanthe. Here’s how the rest of the box office shaped up Read more

Weekend Wrap Up: The Best View is Lakeview
September 22, 2008 by Joe · Leave a Comment
Terrace, that is. Lakeview Terrace won the weekend box office with $15.6 M. Films this September have been performing incredibly well. Despite the recent downturn in the economy, it doesn’t seem to have affected the theatre industry in terms of Box Office. September is a typically slow month, but things have been looking up so far. In addition, I’d like to note that my prediction for Lakeview Terrace as the choice movie this weekend was correct, as reported in my weekly Movies This Weekend! column. I wasn’t right about my second choice though, as Burn After Reading stayed hot with the #2 spot. Read more

Hey all.. my most recent season of Movie Moguls ended, and I totally rocked. Came in first place actually… out of only 2 though. I can say that I’m better than my brother, but is anyone else interested? It’s pretty fun, and doesn’t take a huge time committment. Read more

Movies This Weekend! 9/12/08
September 9, 2008 by Joe · Leave a Comment
Alright all, I’m back and refreshed after a light week… my birthday week! Only one movie graced our presence last week… and as you can read over here at Film School Rejects, it wasn’t all that impressive. I agree with the article that the release schedule got all messed up, that Righteous Kill should have been released last week along with Bangkok Dangerous. I really don’t know what they were thinking but… I don’t make those decisions. In any case, this week is packed, but is it just quantity or will we have some quality as well? Let’s take a look.
Burn After Reading, Directed by Joel Coen, Rated R
A dark spy comedy from the Academy Award winning directors Joel and Ethan Coen. John Malkovich plays an ousted CIA official, whose memoir accidentally falls into the hands of a couple of gym employees intent on exploiting their find.
Interesting note about this film: Was the opening night film of the 2008 Venice International Film Festival.
Righteous Kill, Directed by Jon Avnet, Rated R
A pair of veteran New York City Police officers (Al Pacino and Robert De Niro) are on the trail of a vigilante serial killer. After 30 years as partners in the force, Detectives David Fisk and Thomas Cowan should be ready for retirement. Instead of hanging up their badges, they are called into investigate the murder of a notorious pimp. It appears to have ties to a case that the two solved years ago. Like the original case they solved, the victim is a suspected criminal whose body is found, accompanied by a four line poem that justifies the crime. Combined with other crimes that take place, the detectives realize they are looking for a serial killer who targets criminals that have fallen through the justice system, to take them off the streets for good. This makes the men question: Did they put the wrong man behind bars?
Tyler Perry’s The Family That Preys, Directed by Tyler Perry, Rated PG-13
Charlotte Cartwright and her close friend Alice Pratt have enjoyed a lasting friendship despite the differences in their social statuses. However, their lives become tumultous as their adult children’s extramarital affairs, unethical business practices, and a dark paternity secret threaten to tear apart their families. Despite all this, Charlotte and Alice deicde to take a breather from all this and take a cross country road trip where they rediscover themselves and possibly find a way to save their families.
Women, Directed by Diane English, Rated PG-13
Meg Ryan, Eva Mendes, and Annette Bening start in this comedy where a group of close friends meet to talk about their relationships. Scandals and affairs run amok as the women share their stories.
Joe Weekend Outlook
Well, I’ve already expressed how disappointed I was in Hollywood for their poor release schedule, and how this week is jam-packed with new releases. However, it’s time to answer the Quantity/Quality question. I honestly feel that there is some good quality films coming out this weekend. For me, the headliner is Burn After Reading, the spy-comedy. First off, it’s got a great cast, one that I think will work extremely well together. George Clooney seems to have a way of making slightly darker movies his own, and performing extremely well. The next film that really intrigues me is the new Tyler Perry movie. I’ve been a pretty big fan of his movies in the past, and I think that this will have the same heartwarming qualities that have made his other films so successful. Of course, this one doesn’t look to have Madea in it.. she’s one of my all time favorite characters!
Actually, looking back, Righteous Kill interests me just as much… scratch that, more than the new Tyler Perry movie. I’m looking to have some action, so for me, that nudges Righteous Kill up just a couple notches over The Family that Preys. The story behind Righteous Kill seems so interesting, and it’s something that could happen so easily in real life. Nothing like a good police drama mystery.. and adding in two great talents in Pacino and De Niro make it that much better.
To cap off things… I’m not so sure about The Women. They better hope they can grab some of the crowd that headed out to see Sex and the City, but having no TV base behind this film, as well as a weak advertising campaign (as far as I can tell), it doesn’t really bode well. I know that I’m not getting dragged out to see it, so it can’t possibly be that good, right? Feel free to prove me wrong! If you’ve got a good review of it, I’ll link it up on this post.
What do you think folks.. did they do it right this week?
