Movies this Weekend! 8/13/08-8/15/08
August 12, 2008 by Joe · 2 Comments
We’re definitely getting back into the fall movie season, and you can tell because a lot more movies are getting released on the same week. It’s tough to try to compete with The Dark Knight or Iron Man, so it seems like studios are holding on to their projects until the fall. In any case, that leaves us with much to talk about this week, so here we go!
Henry Poole is Here - Rated PG, Directed by Mark Pellington
Henry Poole lives the perfect life, full of opportunities and potential. However, after a bad doctor’s appointment, Henry gets news that he doesn’t want to hear. Trying to get away from it all, he flees his life. He’s now left alone in a new house and a new place, hoping that he can escape his fate. His new neighborhood is definitely not what he expected. They welcome him fine and are nice enough, but after a “miracle” is discovered on a backyard wall, and constant interruptions from a young girl with a tape recorder, all his hopes of peace are thrown out the window.
Joe’s Take - I have absolutely no idea how this movie is going to do. To be honest with you, I’ve never even heard of this movie, and I should know about most movies because I rummage through posters to check and see what’s coming out! It sounds like it could be a sleeper movie, but I’m not sure. Does anyone else know anything about this movie or want to see it?
Mirrors - Rated R, directed by Alexandre Aja
From the director who brought us High Tension
and The Hills Have Eyes
comes another Horror/Thriller. Keifer Sutherland plays an ex-cop whose home is invaded by angry and deadly spirits by its mirrors. Strange, terrifying things begin to happen…. it’s all in the mirrors.
Joe’s Take - When I first heard about this movie coming out I actually thought that it might be pretty interesting to watch, and I still might head out to go see it, but I’m not so sure anymore. This movie concept seems so overused now… does anyone know if this is actually a take on an Asian horror flick? It’s interesting to see Sutherland in this kind of role, I’m interested to see how he will do. In the end, I see this movie making a little bit of noise on Friday night, like most horror/thriller flicks. Now I hope that I don’t have to babysit the kids again. Thanks, Hollywood, for the R-rated movies! On the plus side, the poster is pretty freaky
The Clone Wars - Rated PG, Directed by Dave Filoni
A new take on one of the more recent Star Wars
movie. An intergalactic struggle between good and evil, The Clone Wars explores characters both old and new such as Anakin’s padawan learner, Ahsoka. Familiar villians such as Palpatine, Count Dooku, and General Grevious are also featured as they try to take over the galaxy. The fate of the world lies in the hands of the Jedi Knights, as they take on action packed battles and brand new revelations.
Joe’s Take - I’m actually excited about this movie. I’m not sure it needed to be made (kinds makes it seem like Lucas is just using it as a cash cow) but I surely hope that it doesn’t disappoint. I really like the animation style that has been used for The Clone Wars and I’m really interested in seeing how the story of Star Wars is adopted into this film. I predict that this will definitely have a strong opening weekend. Can’t wait to hear that theme again!
Tropic Thunder - Rated R, Directed by Ben Stiller
Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. play three actors who are working on a war movie in southeast Asia. Unfortunately for them, they get caught in the middle of a real war, and don’t even realize it! To escape the situation they are in, they must become as hard as the characters they play in movies.
Joe’s Take - Meh. I’m not a huge fan of all of these guys. I will admit that Robert Downey Jr. made me a fan with Iron Man but I saw the trailer for this movie and really just thought ugh. I know that people are going to want to see this movie, but personally I don’t see the appeal. It might have it’s funny moments but in my personal opinion, it’s going to be a pretty stupid movie. Maybe that’s what they’re looking for with it. In any case, it comes out on the 13th instead of the 15th like the rest of the releases. I’m assuming that’s to extend the box office weekend for the movie so it puts up some stronger numbers. Not for me, but maybe for you!
Vicky Cristina Barcelona - Rated PG-13, Directed by Woody Allen
Two young Americans spend a summer in Spain. While there, they meet a flamboyant artist and his beautiful but crazy ex-wife. Vicky is very straight laced and is about to be married, but Cristina is sexually adventurous and a free spirit. When love takes over, the results are both harrowing and hilarious!
Joe’s Take - Again, another movie that I’ve heard nothing about, though I’m interested because of Scarlett Johannsson. Woody Allen seems to have a way of making good movies with her, so I don’t doubt that this film will do well, but it only interests me on the surface. Basically, I want to see it for the ladies. I may also see it for the lady, but I don’t know if she’s interested in this one. How about you?
Phew. There you have it, the movies this weekend and my oh so important opinion on how they’ll do or if I want to see them. Do you agree with me, or not? What do you think you’ll see?

Movies this Wednesday! 8/6/08
August 5, 2008 by Joe · 3 Comments
Well, the movies come out early this week, so I’m gonna get hoppin on this post while I got some time. This past weekend was a bit of a disappointment for me… it didn’t really pop like I wanted it to. That made for a long weekend, especially with the nice-ish weather and me being stuck inside all weekend. Lets hope that this week’s features provide a little more excitement, which I’m pretty sure they will.
Pineapple Express - Directed by David Gordon Green, Rated R
From the guys that brought us Superbad (which I thought was excellent) comes the action comedy Pineapple Express. Dale Denton is a lazy stoner who has the unlucky fate of being the only witness to a murder by a crooked cop and the city’s most dangerous drug lord. Having earlier bought a rare strain of weed known as Pineapple Express, he panics and leaves it at the scene of the crime. He now has a second reason to visit the lazy dealer Saul Silver, where he purchased the weed. He needs to know if the weed can be traced back to him.. and it just so happens that it is so rare that it can be traced back to him. As the two of them run for their lives, they discover that it’s not the weed that’s causing their paranoia… the bad guys really are after them trying to get rid of them as fast as they can.
Joe’s Take - Pineapple Express looks to follow in the shoes of Superbad last summer, but at least to me, it doesn’t look as good. I’m not saying that it’s not going to be good, because I think it is gonna be good, just that Superbad will be better. Of course, this poses another problem for me: It’s another movie that I have to check IDs for…which sucks. Putting all that behind me though, Pineapple Express looks to be just about as hilarious as Superbad. We’ll have to see if James Franco as Saul Silver can be as good as McLovin. I’m not sure he can do it, but it’s up to him to prove me wrong. Seth Rogen is generally a winner, so this should find it’s way into the top 2.
Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2 - Directed by Sanaa Hamri, Rated PG-13
Three years after the girls first hit the screen in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, they return. Despite the great distances that separate them when they head for college, their friendship remains strong. Sisterhood 2 will delve further into their lives as they experience life before heading to college.
Joe’s Take - For some reason, my lovely girlfriend is going crazy for this movie… but I’m not. I’d rather see Pineapple Express, but for some reason I may end up at this one. The first movie was a bit of a surprise hit, and I’d expect those people that saw the first one and were fans of it to come out and check out the second incarnation. I can’t imagine it being much more than the first one, which I did not see, but the fans of these types of movies usually find them to be good for the most part. I can’t comment on what I think not having seen it, but I think it’ll do fairly well. Will also let you know if I get dragged kicking and screaming to it. That’s for you, babe.
That’s all for this weekend, hopefully it provides me a little more fun than this past weekend! Are you guys headed out to check out Seth and the boys? Or will you be with your ladies at the Traveling Pants?

Movies This Weekend! 8/1/08
August 1, 2008 by Joe · 2 Comments
Ugh. Sorry guys. I’ve finally been able to get a good meal in and a much needed nap. Having two jobs is really starting to get to me, but hopefully I’ll be able to pull through. I am upset that I missed the one year anniversary of this blog though. I’ll have to do something special for it …. I’m not really sure yet. Big blogs can do giveaways and stuff like that, but I’m just little ol me, reporting on movies when I get a chance! In any case, this post is for the movies this weekend! (Which I missed last week)
This week brings a couple features to the table… but for some reason I still think it will be The Dark Knight putting up strong numbers. What a movie… I can’t believe how many records it’s broken. Well, here we go!
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - Directed by Rob Cohen, Rated PG-13
Brendan Fraser returns as adventurer Rick O’ Connell, but this time, he’s in China. The ancient Han Emperor has been resurrected, and threatens to bring the entire world under his rule. Doomed into suspended animation by a double crossing sorceress, the Emperor and his 10000 man army have been lying in wait. When Alex, Rick’s son, is tricked into re-animating the army, he must seek help from his father, the only one he knows who has had experience dealing with the undead.
Joe’s Take - From a personal point of view, I want to see this movie. I’ve been a fan of The Mummy series, and I think that this is a pretty cool extension. I don’t see this movie being anything like the others though, which could be a good or a bad thing depending on what the viewer thinks. The problem with this is that they don’t seem to want to compete with what is being released at the same time or before. I don’t see much excitement. I get the feeling that a lot was given away in trailers, which is usually reserved for those spoof movies. Not saying that this is a spoof film, and while I’m excited, I don’t know how many others will be.
The Square - Directed by Nash Edgarton
Raymond is stuck in the monotony of a loveless marriage. He becomes entangled in an affair with a beautiful, trouble girl named Carla. Carla, wanting to get out of her own marriage, presents Raymond with a proposition. She takes the fruits of her husband’s latest crime, and offers to run away with Ray and start a new life. Intrigued, Ray hires an arsonist to cover their tracks. However, the plan goes horribly wrong, alarms go off, and suspicions arise. When the dust finally settles, Raymond and Carla begin receiving blackmail letters, and are threatened by her ex-husband. As the deadline set by the mystery blackmailer approaches, Raymond and Carla find out how far they will really go for love.
Joe’s Take - Not gonna lie… never heard of this movie before. The story does sound interesting, and it’s something that I would like to try to see if I had extra time.. but I don’t. It doesn’t rank high on the priority list, and with the little press that it’s gotten, I just don’t see The Square making any sort of impact on the box office this weekend. Anyone else heard anything about this?
Swing Vote - Directed by Joshua Michael Stern, Rated PG-13
Bud Johnson is an apathetic, beer swilling guy who has just coasted through life, and its passing him by. The light of his life is his precocious, overachieving daughter Molly. Molly is the one to take care of both of them, and is doing a great job until election day. She sets into place a series of events that leaves the determination of the President of the United States dependent on one vote: Her father’s.
Joe’s Take - Another movie that interests me, but I don’t see it doing really well. It’s pretty well placed in terms of time, especially with our current presidential election campaigns, but it seems a little cliche. What I do like is that it seems like it could be like Thank You for Smoking, which is one of my favorite movies. I love that sentence I just wrote. Something seems wrong about it. Anyway, there’s too much competition for this movie to do really well, but I think it will pique some interest.
That’s it for the wide releases this week. I know that there are a lot of people looking forward to the release of Pineapple Express, and I’m hoping to get a chance to see that before it comes out, but who knows! I’ll have to update this post with pictures later, as I’m really tired, but hope you guys are having a great week and an even better weekend! See you at the movies… right?

Movies This Weekend! 7/18/08
July 15, 2008 by Joe · Leave a Comment
Not gonna miss this week, folks. It’s a huge weekend, with another one of those huge summer movie blockbusters that means… long nights for me. It’s ok though, because I actually enjoy working those busy weekends. Now let’s take a look at what all the hype is about!
The Dark Knight - Rated PG-13, Directed by Christopher Nolan
Gotham city was overrun with criminals, until Batman, Harvey Dent, and the Police commissioner team up to eliminate crime from the streets for good. There’s just one criminal they didn’t plan on having to deal with… and he’s ready to take the town by storm. Batman will have his hands full with the Joker, as this criminal pushes him to limit of what is good and what is evil.
Joe’s Take - It’s Batman. What more can I really say than that. I’m extremely excited for this movie, and I hope to screen it and provide a review for you guys soon. This has had such an incredible marketing campaign with the viral sites and posters, and commercials. No doubt the film will also be aided by the unfortunate and untimely passing of Heath Ledger, who supposedly revolutionized the character of the Joker, really taking it and making it his own. I anticipate huge numbers for this movie. If Hancock can pull in 100+ million in 5 days, I’m positive The Dark Knight will pull in even more. $125 million for the first weekend alone, and it WILL become another member of the $300 million club before the end of the summer.
Mamma Mia - Rated PG-13, Directed by Phyllida Lloyd.
An all star cast led by Meryl Streep takes this feature film adapatation of a hit Broadway musical to the big screen. Featuring the music of ABBA, Mamma Mia tells the story of Sophie, the spirted daughter of former free spirit Donna. Sophie is about to be married, and while Donna has raised her all alone her entire life, she reveals to Sophie that she doesn’t know who her father is. Undeterred, Sophie invites three potential fathers to her wedding, leading them on a journey to find out who her father is before her wedding.
Joe’s Take - This is not a film for me, but I can anticipate some success from this movie, especially with a private screening already being bought out at my theatre. This reminds me of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, a movie that started out rather small, but ended up being a huge commercial success. It might take a few weeks, but Mamma Mia will definitely make its viewers happy. Don’t expect big things in the first week, as it has some stiff competition in The Dark Knight. I can’t imagine too many guys would be drawn away from that to see Mamma Mia.
Space Chimps - Rated G, Directed by Kirk de Micco.
An animated, intergalactic comedy featuring a band of astronaut chimps with the “wrong stuff”. Ham III is the slacker grandson of the first chimp blasted into space. Along with two other chimps, they are to embark on a dangerous mission through a black hole to another inhabited planet. When they are stranded there, they must aid the locals get rid of their tyrannical leader, and also figure out how to get back to Earth.
Joe’s Take - Ok, I don’t know who’s big idea it was to release this film on the same day as The Dark Knight, but they are definitely going to feel the hit. I am actually very intrigued by this film personally, and I wanted to see it, but if I had to pick one movie for the weekend, it would not be Space Chimps. It could be one for parents to dump their kids in while they see Dark Knight, but I find that unlikely. Sorry Chimps, you’re not going to make it too far on this weekend. $12 million opening, if they’re lucky.

Hey! Back again with two posts (almost) in a row. I’ve actually got a few more that I’m going to pump out, just got a few shifts at work that may hold them off for a bit. I’ll work hard to try to get them out for you guys though! It’ll only help you guys participate more and win some free advertising on the blog, right?
Anyway, let’s continue on with what this post is meant for: The Movies This Weekend!
Last week featured a couple films that performed pretty well. We had The Incredible Hulk, which despite early predictions of huge numbers, pulled in a respectable $55 Million, short of what some thought, but still good. Also, there was The Happening, which fell short to a swift kick from Kung Fu Panda. What does this weekend have in store for us? Unfortunately for me, nothing I’m really looking forward to, though they do feature some very attractive women….
Get Smart - Directed by Peter Segal, Rated PG-13
Maxwell Smart has recently been promoted to field agent, and he is on a mission to thwart a plot for world domination by the evil crime syndicate KAOS. However, Smart only came upon this job because the identities of all the secret agents in the US Spy Agency Control have been compromised. He will not be alone though, as he is joined by the lovely Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway), even though he was hoping for a pairing with superstar agent 23. Armed with no talent, but some cool gadgets and some enthusiasm to boot, Smart must do everything he can to stop the doomsday plan for world domination.
Joe’s Take - Ummm… I’ve got a pretty big thing for Anne Hathaway. She the reason why I watched The Devil Wears Prada. Ok, her and Emily Blunt, but I’ve still got a thing for Anne. I would see this movie for her alone, though I’m not too excited about the concept or anything else really about it. It seems like Steve Carrell is becoming a little bit like Adam Sandler, where he keeps play similar characters. That being said, Zohan did fairly well at the box office, so I predict that Get Smart will be able to rake in at least $25 million this weekend.
The Love Guru - Directed by Marco Schnabel, Rated PG-13
Mike Myers returns to the big screen in Love Guru, which features love, hockey, and …. Indian Spirituality? This comedy explores how an indian love guru can help out a hockey team… and that’s about it.
Joe’s Take - Sorry about the short synopsis on this movie guys, but that’s all that Rotten Tomatoes really had to offer. I think that you’ve seen most of what this movie has to offer from the commercials, but I could be wrong. Uh… just like Get Smart. I think this one is going to be like Austin Powers, but in a different setting. It could be what we need for a breather from all the action/thriller movies, but then again, you have two to pick from this weekend that would fit that category and are new. Oh. But this one has Jessica Alba… a very big plus. I’d say they split it up in the end, $25 million each.
So there we go, the movies this weekend. Two very similar features, in my opinion. I can’t really pick based on the main male character, and I have to say that I can’t really pick based on the female leads either!
I guess this will come down to what the lovely girlfriend wants to see… if she wants to go to the movies, that is.

Welcome back again! Looks like my predictions for last week were a bit off.. Narnia unfortunately bombed at the box office. Well, it bombed when compared with what was expected of it… and this huge blockbuster season. With only one movie opening this weekend, there’s only one chance to begin to make it up. Fortunately for the box office, I have a feeling the movie opening this weekend is gonna be a huge hit, and unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know what it is!
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - Directed by Steven Spielberg, Rated PG13
When Indiana Jones last went on an adventure, the time was 1938, and the world was on the brink of war as Jones tried to find the Holy Grail. Now, 19 years later, it’s time for another adventure. Many things have changed, while others have stayed the same. The world is again in danger, threatened by nuclear annihilation. Indy must strive to ensure that a precious, mysterious object remains safe against those who are trying to destroy humanity.
Joe’s Take - It’s Indiana Jones, do I really need to say more? The answer to that question is no, but I’m going to anyway. It’s been a long time coming since the last Indy film, and there are definitely going to be high expectations. I can’t guarantee that the movie is going to please all the fans are sure to criticize it, but I can guarantee you this: It’s gonna rock the box office. Look for Indy to do a bit better than Iron Man, raking in $125 million.
That’s all for this weekend, it should be a huge weekend! I’m going to be extra busy.. and thats good, cuz my baby’s gone all weekend. That’ll give me a bit of time to catch up on watching some movies… gonna catch Narnia and this one… let me know if you’ve seen either… what did you think? Also don’t forget about the Theme Song poll, win a movie soundtrack!

Man, the summer movie season is starting to hit full swing, despite the disappointment that was Speed Racer last weekend. It doesn’t stop this week, with another major release. Hopefully you’re enjoying what’s been released so far. I honestly think this Summer might be even bigger than last summer… and that’s hard to top when you consider some of the movies that came out last summer:
- Shrek 3
- Spider Man 3
- Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
And many more! There’s already one bona fide hit in Iron Man this year… does this week send out another?
Well… if it’s going to, we know which one it’s going to be. That’s because there’s only one major release this week. It’s kind of expected, especially with movies getting bigger and bigger, and competition for a smaller and smaller niche takes over. Anyway, here you have it!
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - Directed by Andrew Adamson, Rated PG
The second chapter of the bestselling C.S. Lewis books. The Pevensie siblings are once again brought to the world of Narnia, one year after they left it last time. However, 1300 years have passed in Narnian time, and the Golden Age of Narnia has come to an end. The Telmarines have taken over, and Narnia is under the rule of King Miraz, who rules ruthlessly. The four siblings soon meet Narnia’s rightful heir to the throne, the young Prince Caspian, who has been forced into hiding. King Miraz plans to put his own son on the throne after he passes. With the help of some magical creatures in Narnia, the four siblings and Caspian embark on a wonderful journey to try to reclaim the rightful throne.
Joe’s Take - What can I say, this is going to be huge. I didn’t think that I would enjoy the first one, but I found that the great special effects combined with some likeable characters made me enjoy it a lot. Personally, if you’re a fan of Harry Potter type fantasy movies, you’ll really enjoy this one. It’s going to finally push the Iron Clad hero off the top of the charts and rack in about $100 mil in the process. Get ready to wait in some long lines… but it’ll all be worth it!
Ahh.. the summer movie season. I love it. Extended hours at the theatre, and a ton of fun movies to watch. Is Prince Caspian on your list of must sees this summer? It’s on mine!
